Leadership Transition in the CEZ

The board of directors of the CEZ announced in May that Shannon Forney was completing her term of the service of as Interim Executive Director effective May 31, 2017. Forney, co-owner of Workhorse Coffee Bar, a CEZ business, and curator of “The Smallest Museum in St. Paul,” stepped in to serve as interim Executive Director in December 2016. The Board is grateful for her contributions and guidance during this time including her work on the CEZ’s Knight Arts Challenge Grant, maintaining the CEZ newsletter and website, continuing communication with current and prospective CEZ businesses, and maintaining art initiatives including “Dear St. Paul” and “We Make It Here.”

In addition, Shelby Pasell, who served as CEZ communications coordinator, has accepted a new position with International Institute of Minnesota. The board will be replacing the communications role with a contract editor/publisher. The board wishes to warmly thank Shelby for helping to put the CEZ on the map with a widely read and valued newsletter.

These staff changes open new opportunities for involvement with the Creative Enterprise Zone. The Board has applied for 501c3 status and is preparing to expand board membership and activities. In the next few months, the board will focus on strategic planning, public and place-making activities, and announcing meetings with key constituencies including:

  • gatherings of CEZ business owners
  • people interested in representing the CEZ on the 10-year city plan for the neighborhood with the St. Anthony Park Community Council (SAPCC)
  • property owners and civic policy makers regarding design guidelines and other initiatives growing from our partnership with the Towerside Innovation District
