Green space comes to a corner of the Zone

A new 1.5–acre city park will soon bring fresh air to the area south of the Green Line's Westgate stop. Adjacent to the housing being built south of Franklin Avenue, the site is on the city line near the 280 ramp off I-94.

In addition to open space and a tree-shaded seating area, the park may include a spur to the southeast (not shown here) which would connect to a future bike path on the Wabash Avenue Bridge over 280.

That would link the park with the Grand Rounds bike path, since cyclists from the Minneapolis side can reach the park from Sharon Avenue. Public comments on design refinements are welcome, said Karen Nelson of the St. Anthony Park Community Council in an open meeting in July, when these diagrams were shared. For example:

  • Should the main entrance be on the west side (Emerald Street) or the east (Berry)?

  • Which of those two streets do you walk or bike on more often?

  • What should its name be? Front runners: Westgate Park, Unity Park.
